Our Words Matter!
Living with addiction can be hard enough. We can work to end the stigma around the disease. Our words can make a massive impact on whether or not people seek support and treatment. You can build someone up or break someone down with just a word. All of us have the power to shift how we speak about addiction and do our part in ending the crisis in America.
Pledge to describe addiction as a treatable disease and use empowering language instead of words that can hurt and cause people to avoid getting support. We can change our words:
- Addict, Druggie, User, Junkie → someone with substance abuse disorder
- Alcoholic, Drunk → someone with alcohol use disorder
- Clean, Sober → substance free, in recovery
- Drug Offender → someone arrested for drug violation
Addiction kills more people every year in the USA than breast cancer, gun violence, and car accidents combined. Only 1 in 10 people who need treatment ever receive it. Those who struggle with addiction face crippling stigma, too rarely receive high-quality care, and suffer inequitable rates of incarceration. We, the fifth virtual leadership class of Ascension Leadership Academy (ALA), are taking a stand to transform lives by partnering with Shatterproof, the visionary non-profit creating policy change, revolutionizing addiction treatment, ending the stigma of addiction, and empowering and educating communities. When you take this pledge as part of our campaign, you’re supporting a transformative solution to the addiction crisis in the United States. Together, we can end addiction and advocate for our family, friends, and neighbors who are in need of support.
